Omega-3

We are lucky to have many great haircare and scalp care products.

We invest in the best shampoo and scalp serum products to make our hair and scalp healthy and the best looking.

But for optimal hair and scalp health you should also be consuming Omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids have well-know health benefits, from reducing inflammation to helping with depression and anxiety to improving brain and eye health.

The Omega−3 fatty acids involved in human physiology are α-linolenic acid (ALA), found in plant oils, and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which are found in fish oils.

Many people consume EPA and DHA (through eating fish or taking fish oil supplements) to promote hair growth  and prevent hair loss which suggests that the Omega-3 found in fish oil:

  • provides essential proteins and nutrients to hair follicles and skin
  • prevents hair follicle inflammation — a factor that can directly contribute to hair loss
  • promotes circulation in the scalp that may trigger hair growth

Many of us don’t eat fish, and it is hard to find fresh fish.

But do the math. We eat once a week at a good Sushi place.  A 3-ounce serving of fresh fish provides 1.1-1.9g total Omega-3 According to the American Heart Association (AHA).

If we do once a week , 3 ounce / fish equals 1.5g total of Omega-3.  Over the course of a year – 52 weeks – we can consumer 78 g total  of Omega-3, which is ideal for your hair and scalp health.

Tip: The best sources for fish oils are the fatty fish – salmon, mackerel and herring.

Tip: I don’t recommend that you eat frozen fish.  Freezing compromises the integrity of the fish oils.

Tip: when we eat sushi, I recommend that you eat at a restaurant as the the fish will most likely be fresh. And trust me, you don’t want to get sick from eating fish.
